THE JEWELS OF LAKE TANA: devotion, places, people

This work is devoted to the Lake Tana region in the north of Ethiopia, which is the country’s principal water basin. The images and the text invite the reader to explore five aspects of an area that captures the paradoxes of modern Ethiopia.
First of all, is Lake Tana, inexorably connected to the local fishing and tourism economy. The lake is dotted with basalt islands on which rise Christian churches and monasteries – an invaluable historical and artistic treasure.
The second section of the book leads readers to these islands, to follow rough paths to the monasteries, and there to admire the amazing paintings that bear witness to century-old devotion.
Next comes Gondar, the first fixed capital of the country whose castles tell tales of kings and queens, and clashes and battles.
Bahir Dar, the door of water, is the regional capital: once a fishing village it is now a city of 200,000 inhabitants, a buzzing cross-roads of the old and the new, tradition and modernity.
Finally, a homage to the people encountered along the journey: fishermen, women at the Bahir Dar market, students, monks and the many children who shared their smiles with us.
The book is in three languages (Italian, English and German).
